complained. "None of it makes any sense. What could have caused them to be up here in the first place? And what in the world would make anyone drive their car over the edge of a cliff like that?"
The shovel repeatedly gorged its way into the tortured earth around the base of the monument. Charlie's frantic efforts had already carved out a sizable hole. The pale orange shimmer of the lantern gave the whole scene a bizarre dimension of unreality that made Peggy shudder. Within a matter of minutes, he had managed to tunnel his way into the surprisingly yielding earth beneath the base. Despite the raw chill of the wind blowing in off the water, Charlie had to stop from time to time to wipe the sweat off his forehead.
Now even Peggy's mood was beginning to change. The threats were forgotten. She watched him with her own growing morbid curiosity.
The blade of the shovel hit something hard. She heard him mutter and watched as he laid down the shovel, braced his foot against the edge of the hole and put his shoulder to the cold marble of his father's monument. "Help me," he grunted. She was surprised that he thought her strength would make a difference, but it did and the stone shifted, grating
